History of MotorCops for Kids

Back in 2002, Steve Dye, a Motorcycle Officer for the Garland Police Department, came up with an idea to host a motorcycle toy run for the community.  He knew that most of a traffic officer’s contacts occur in the negative context of a motorist being issued a traffic citation or as a result of involvement in a traffic accident.  He set out to establish an event that would benefit the Garland community and offer a positive reflection of traffic officers and police officers in general.  He understood that the key to the success of any motorcycle toy run would be the involvement of the bikers.  Therefore, he reached out to Jerry Patterson who, at the time, was the President of the Harley Owners Group – Dallas Chapter that rides out of Dallas Harley Davidson in Garland.  Jerry was immediately enthusiastic about the venture and, thus, MotorCops for Kids was born.

MotorCops for Kids was constructed to be a unique motorcycle toy run that would not only encompass a parade, but an entire day of activities for riders and non-riders alike.  MotorCops for Kids offers a long, scenic ride through the city and the country and is always police-escorted to allow for a safe ride with no stopping.  Upon arrival at the Hella Shrine Temple at the end of the parade, participants are invited to participate in obstacle course and slow ride competitions for both male and female riders in all motorcycle classes.  These competitions were designed to duplicate the police motorcycle competitions that had never been offered to the civilian rider.

Over the last fifteen years, MotorCops for Kids has donated over $356,500 to the Shriners Hospitals for Children and over 14,000 toys have been collected for needy children at Christmas time.  The success of MotorCops for Kids is directly attributable to the partnership between the Garland Police Department, Dallas Harley Davidson and the Harley Owners Group – Dallas Chapter and the Shriners.  Our volunteers work very hard throughout the year and behind the scenes to ensure the success of MotorCops for Kids and make certain that our toy run is always one of the most enjoyable experiences, in the nation, for our bikers.  Above all, MotorCops for Kids has always understood that the bikers are the people who make the event happen each year and we thank all of you for your support.

God Bless.
